~ The Lore of Ug ~

The Story So Far...

A hundred years ago, there was a cataclysm (there’s always a cataclysm, am I right? Anyhoo...), so the kobolds had to flee their underground warrens for the surface. And they built the village of Ug over the ruins of their former home. For fear of what lay below, they had their mightiest sorcerer, Bugrug the Bombastic (also Bugrug the Pompous, Bugrug the Flatulent, and Bugrug the Purveyor of Over-Priced Tchotchkes), seal the caverns with a mystical ward .

In the years that followed, the tribe’s numbers grew (three guesses how) and Ug became prosperous, trading with other races and nations all over the land of Savarria. Then someone (we suspect Dugger) found a dimensional gate beneath a trap door. Ever the entrepreneurs, the kobolds put up a sign over the gate saying “Dimensional travelers welcome. Bring lots of shiney things.”

Since then, the village of Ug has grown into a major commercial hub of the multiverse, a magnet for everything from cash-strapped Dark Lords to orc loan sharks. The kobolds have got their hands full. Can they both survive and thrive in their new home? We’ll see...

Ug? Seriously? (or “How the Village Got its Snappy Name”)

Officially, the village’s name is “Kobohai-Uur,” which means “For the Kobold People” (viva la Revolucion!!); but that didn’t exactly roll off their tiny tongues. Then the “Society for Liberated Kobolds” came up with “Nubsnagahai” (“No Slaves”). But who listens to those bleeding hearts, anyway?

Then a committee formed by the kobolds Dak and Gimbuzg deliberated (argued and threatened each other) for a fortnight. Gallons of skull whomper ale were swilled, much food was thrown, many kobolds were pantsed. And then, before the whole village council, they announced the happy occasion: they’d finally come up with the name! And that name was…

Ug.

You could have heard a pin drop in that room.

Gimbuzg was tarred. Dak was feathered. But word got out. And since “Ug” means “Hello,” and all the kobolds were already saying it…

All the village signs say “Ug” now (civil suits are pending).
